Introduction
The Common Law
See the Blackstone quote on this, and compare to Bentham. See Posner's article "Blackstone and Bentham".
Lord Diplock said in 1966,
After all, that is the beauty of the common law; it is a maze, not a motorway.
Morris v. C.W.Martin, 1 QB 716 (Diplock, L. J. , 1966). A bailment case.
‘The great crime which the moneyed classes and promoters of industry committed.....was the condemning of the workers to ugliness....formless and ugly surroundings, ugly ideals, ugly religion....ugly relationships between workers and employers’. (DH Lawrence).
Liberals and Humor
Liberals also hate humor, and have for many years. In the French 3rd Republic, even, the humorists were the conservatives. https://quillette.com/2021/01/07/the-death-of-political-cartooning-and-why-it-matters/
Remember the joke about how man yfeminists it takes to cahnge a light bulb.
Recycling and Garbage Worship
Liberals love garbage. Also, they like to have lots of garbage cans everywhere. They like bright blue or red plastic recycling bins to litter the streets and hallways.
Liberals and Toilets
Liberals like having handicapped toilets everywhere.
- "A sign your civilization may be decadent: the urinals 150 years ago were more beautiful than the public monuments today."Nec Divinos@LColubrum A public urinal in Paris, France, 1875. (twitter 2021).
Liberals and Ramps
The Americans with Disabilities Act has results in ugly ramps everywhere.
Liberals and Gender-Neutered Language
Liberals like to say "he and she" or "he/she" or "they" instead of "he". They have no ear for the music and rhythm and nuance of language; it is all political. Orwell's 1984 is about this as much as about using language to oppress. The Newspeak language is ugly as well as constraining.
Liberals and the Bible
They got rid of "thee" and "thou" and picturesque language.
Liberals the Visual Arts
- Lenoir's French Revolution museum to rescue French art. New Criterion (2021).
Liberals and the Liberal Arts
Liberals put no value on beauty, only on ideology, in the books and poems they read.
Architecture
Samuel Hughes (2022) arguing against the survivorship bias theory of why old buildings are not so often ugly.
