I don't think it violates confidentiality to say I *told* (begged) IU Trustees to announce the presidential search as "closed" IN ADVANCE: many good reasons to do it that way, but faculty need to know it's happening, not expect to see 3 candidates, etc.

There are so many things that are fine if you announce what you're doing, but either *are* underhanded or *look* underhanded if you don't tell people about it in advance. I wish everyone could learn that lesson.

I guess it's not so bad if you really *are* underhanded; it almost bothers me more when it's just due to incompetence.
