A puzzle. Suppose I am esteemed more by faculty the better the department, and that my true quality is better than Ivy Tech but worse than Harvard. Will I find a job? Will I be underplaced, overplaced, or possibly either? Answer for (a) continuous spaces of my quality and department quality, and (b) discrete spaces. Bonus question: What if, instead, I am esteemed more the worse the department is?
This needs modelling (too hard to do in one's head) to look for fixed points. Lattice theory might help. Anyone is free to use the idea; I don't plan on trying to work it into a paper, but it might well result in something publishable. I'm curious as to the answer, though.
