\nas children die asleep.
\nHer eyelids clink shut.
\nThe warm malleability,
\nthe snuggle smell of oatmeal and softly guzzled milk,
\nfade, leave empty fingers,
\nbroken eggshells, empty palms.
\nThe dark closes,
\nand the cradle is a marble horror.
\nNothing can’t be knocked away but nothingness itself.<\/p>\n

Desire pulls my hand
\nand wheels my body through the rut-
\na steaming toddy or a gem\u00fctlich, red-bound book,
\nthat aged-cardboard smell in floppy pages
\nas they flip across my lap.
\nLeft in the dust, alone on the path,
\nmy lost mind whimpers;
\nfor it knows beneath the flesh,
\nis the universe itself –
\nNot the rags, but the bag,
\nNot the book, but the binding,
\nNot the drink but the cup –
\nthe Nothing.
