1988 Christmas List,
http://www.rasmusen.org/_amazon/xmas88.htm
- 1. Tom Wolfe,
Bonfire of the Vanities . A catalog of the
ways
New Yorkers make fools of themselves. Tom Wolfe's best book.
- 2. Ralph Ellison,
The Invisible Man , 581 pages. A first-
person novel
about a young black man made into a Communist leader in 1935ish New
York.
- 3. Movie:
Who Framed Roger Rabbit? . An astoundingly
good
movie. Its only flaw is that the fight scene at the end is too long
and too scary. Otherwise, it's practically perfect.
- 4. Orson Card,
Ender's Game . A recent science fiction
novel
about the wargames that train little boys to become starship
admirals. Psychological science fiction seems to be starting to get
somewhere.
- 5. David Brin,
Startide Rising . A recent science fiction
novel
about a starship crewed by humans and modified dolphins that gets
into trouble with about a dozen kinds of aliens all at once.
- 6. Jonathan Lynn and Anthony Jay,
Yes, Minister . How
bureaucrats thwart politicoes in Whitehall, and how the politicoes
fight back. Very funny and very educational.
- 8. Movie:
The Third Man , Orson Welles in decaying
postwar
Vienna. Mildly depressing, but all the major characters deserve their
fates.
- 9. Robert Heinlein,
Have Space Suit, Will Travel . A science
fiction classic about a teenager who wins a space suit in a contest
and is captured by aliens.
- 10. Joseph Epstein,
Familiar Essays . Essays on everyday life
and manners by a civilized man from Evanston who likes books.
