November 1, 2003. ר De mortuis nil nisi bonum.

I was just thinking about the Latin maxim, "De mortuis nil nisi bonum," (About the Dead, Say Nothing but Good). I think that maxim very pernicious. If a dead person was vile, we should say so, as a deterrent to other evildoers and as an education to the young.

I hope nobody is so rash as to propose a resolution praising Chancellor Brehm's performance at the Bloomington Faculty Council meeting this Tuesday. Her tenure has not been a success, quite apart from her attacks on this web-log. I am quite willing to vote to wish her success in the future, but that is all the more necessary because past experience indicates a little extra help might be needed.
