I don't have time to give this interesting subject the attention it deserves right
now, but I want to note a fact from
The Public
Interest that is relevant:
In a recent paper delivered at Princeton University, political scientist
Gary Jacobson noted that, before the terrorist attacks of September 11,
the gap between Democratic and Republican support of President Bush was
wider than it has been for any prior president, including Bill Clinton.
Before September 11, 88 percent of self-identified Republicans supported
Bush; only 31 percent of self-identified Democrats did. This 57-point
gap was the largest Jacobson had ever found.
This is a fact that needs explaining, especially in light of how attacks by foreigners
powers, and successful responses, usually unify countries rather than dividing them.
