"Impact" As a Verb

Could impact" as a verb ever become respectable? It's hard for me to judge, given my experience. Certain it still, however, serves as a shibboleth, because using impact as a verb is still highly correlated with being a poor writer, much like saying "ain't", which I find much less offensive, natural rather than pretentious.
